Layout + Magazine | since Fall 2022

Task: Publish a bimonthly arts and culture magazine with design that enhances and clarifies the topics discussed
Background: Jerk Magazine is a student publication dedicated to the idea of “jerking” people out of their apathy, focusing on issues and stories that other campus newspapers and magazines may ignore. As creative director, I put together all aspects of the print magazine, managing a team of 8 designers and 7 illustrators to create art, design pages, and edit layouts for four 68-page issues per year.

The Process

Plan + Schedule: For each issue, the executive team determines the timeline, page assignments, package theme, and other changing aspects of the magazine. As creative director, I assign art to the illustrators and layouts to the designers, ensure communication between the writers and creative team, and help with any unforeseen issues that arise along the way.
Design: After the articles are written, the art is drawn, and the photos are taken, the design team creates the layouts in Adobe InDesign, following the established brand guidelines. During this part of the process, I give first round edits to the designers, double check cohesiveness of the publication, and fill any leftover spaces.
Edit: After the designs are complete, I combine them into the master document and the editorial team completes a final check of all copy and design. When everything is ready, the issue is printed and distributed for the student body to read and enjoy!

This is our December 2024 issue, which I had the absolute pleasure of putting together during my time as design director. Be sure to check out pages 41–48, where I got to put my love of collage to use!
