Many of the typefaces started as sketches. For Squeaky Sans, a unique proposition was asked: what would it look like if a mouse could write? After making a quick list to remind myself of stylistic similarities and target audience (and a small sketch of who might be doing the writing), Squeaky Sans started to take shape.
Moving from paper to digital, the type begins to come to life. One of the most important aspects of typeface creation is consistency across letterforms, so I did a lot of borrowing from letters I had already created. Starting with the downstrokes of capital “H” and the curves of capital “O,” the other characters quickly followed.
Once the set of letters was close to pixel perfect, I worked on the kerning of the alphabet. For Squeaky Sans, the letters are a little closer together, to keep the feel that maybe, just maybe, a little mouse grabbed a big pencil and tried her best to write out the letters.
And now, Squeaky Sans is a functional typeface, with subtle angles and round curves to put a little mousey personality into any project.
